Running a Madrasah

السَّلاَمُ عَلَيْكُمْ وَرَحْمَةُ اللهِ وَبَرَكَاتُهُ

As we approach 12 midday on this Monday 30th March 2020, my message today is specifically for the ꜤUlamā and those who are involved in ‘Running Dārul Ulooms, Madrasahs and Maktabs’.

*** Please keep within ꜤUlamā and let’s rectify this.

Please do not take this personally. At the outset, I would like to make it clear that I am also part of this and we all need to collectively take stock of the situation. Whether intentionally or unintentionally, there are a lot of unfair situations taking place in our Dārul Ulooms and Madrasahs.

The majority have become one man bands. Just because one of us started an Institute off, we feel we and our family are now in charge until the Day of Judgement. We choose our own team and usually end up deciding everything ourselves. Jobs are usually given to family members and so much injustice is taking place.

It is very hard to swallow and a very bitter pill to take, but let each and every one of us sit in front of Almighty Allāh and reflect upon this. Jobs should be allocated according to capabilities, not relationships. Vice Principals do not have to be sons and family members. We have opened a Madrasah, not a business. Apologies if my tone is harsh but this hurts.

As regards Maktabs, a private Maktab is run as a business and there is no harm in this but if you do collect public funds, then why?

  • Make it public
  • Have independents (not family members) as trustees
  • Have a management committee
  • Employ staff according to capability
  • Be transparent with your accounts

This is a very important issue.

Almighty Allāh give us all the right understanding, Āmeen.
