Cleanliness and Litter

السَّلاَمُ عَلَيْكُمْ وَرَحْمَةُ اللهِ وَبَرَكَاتُهُ

It’s Saturday 2nd January 2021.

I wanted to touch upon ‘Cleanliness and Litter’ today.

As Muslims, we have been given a code of life known as the Sharī’ah. Our beautiful Islamic teachings teach us every single thing that we need to know. When it comes to cleanliness, we have been told that ‘Purity is half of faith’. Most of us know this Ḥadīth off by heart and we tend to use it again and again, trying to show the world how wonderful our Islamic teachings are.

However, let’s ponder upon the reality. As local residents, spend about 15 minutes of your time tomorrow, walking round your block of houses to see how much litter and rubbish you can spot. Then put the beautiful Ḥadīth into perspective and see what conclusion you come to.

As Muslims, the majority of us are ‘all talk no action‘. Can we not even keep our own areas clean? Most councils have provided their residents with 2 or 3 bins each. Then how come our areas are full of litter? Once our areas are full of litter and rubbish, get ready for the invasion of the rats. Within days, we’d all be affected.

Come on brothers and sisters, let’s go back to our wonderful teachings again. Not one of us should throw anything away anywhere other than in our own bins. If you have a lot of things to dispose of, use your local recycling centres. A lot of rubbish is from takeaways and general packaging. Dispose of it all in a carrier bag and put the bag into your bin.

Remember, our religion reached all the corners of the world by our actions and manners. When non-Muslims pass by our areas or need to visit our houses, what impression must they be leaving with? If we cannot convince someone to accept our faith, the least we can do is ensure we don’t carry out any action to distance them from Islām.

Clean up your areas and keep them that way. Let 2021 begin with cleanliness and end with cleanliness.

Almighty Allāh grant us all the ability to put our faith into practice, Āmeen.
