Addictions

السَّلاَمُ عَلَيْكُمْ وَرَحْمَةُ اللهِ وَبَرَكَاتُهُ

It’s Wednesday 16th December 2020.

Let’s talk about ‘Addictions’ today.

This is a very important topic and, maybe, affects each and every one of us in one way or another. Simply put, I would say that if someone has fallen into a habit of doing something constantly, whether it is necessary or not, it can be termed as an ‘addiction’.

Each and every family member should keep an eye on each other and the moment they notice that the family member is falling into an ‘addiction’ or becoming ‘addicted’, they should very politely point it out without any delay. Addictions, today, are of many kinds; some more serious than others. Some are very detrimental and could ruin a person, and sometimes families, within a matter of days.

One of the worst addictions is gambling; another is drink. However, more common is drugs, taking and supplying. There are plenty more, and each is a subject in itself.

How do you identify an addict? The moment you notice even a slight difference in your family member’s daily routine, then alarm bells should start to ring. Not coming home at the normal times, sleeping late, getting up early, withdrawing from family activities and meals, not speaking much, getting angry or frustrated very quickly, becoming secretive, overuse of social media … there are many signs.

Do not be complacent and turn a blind eye to the issue. Tackle it head on, and deal with the problem. Remember, it will not go away by itself. I know many families who ignored the initial warning signs and are now paying the price for the rest of their lives.

There is a lot of support out there, and lots of specialist advice. Please do not suffer in silence. Some may be perceived to be taboo subjects, and you may feel your family reputation is at stake if others find out, etc. Please park those negative thoughts to one side. Let the world think what they want. Why do you want to suffer for the rest of your lives because of what others may think? Use common sense, and seek support.

Finally, the obsession that has taken the whole world in its grip is the addiction to mobile gadgets and social media platforms. Hardly anyone is spared. This is very serious and completely destroys the fabric of our society, and our family values. It needs addressing immediately. I have touched upon this in my previous messages.

Start with ‘social media free hours’ during the day. All gadgets to one side, and enjoy family time together reflecting upon your past history and memorable occasions, etc. Have Qur’ān hours and reading hours. From 10pm to 9am make sure all family members put their gadgets away. Don’t fall for the alarm clock trick. A good alarm clock only costs £5. The mobile alarm may cost you your life. Remember my words.

Almighty Allāh give us all the correct understanding and save us all from each and every type of addiction, Āmeen.
