Warning Signs

It’s Saturday 28th August 2021 corresponding with 19th Muḥarram 1443 Hijri.

Let’s focus on Warning Signs today.

There are a number of signs that indicate if one has fallen into any kind of addiction. This is not a comprehensive list nor is it definitive. Having come across a variety of social and domestic family issues during the last 30 years, all these signs are based on first-hand experience.

The first and foremost is the excessive use of electronic gadgets, especially the mobile phone (normal, or smart phone). ‘Excessive’ means they are constantly on the phone; they cannot live without it. This could mean that they are involved in some kind of addiction.

Another major sign is staying up late at night. There is no reason at all for any member of the family to stay up late. Set a time in your house (maybe 10pm, or 11pm at the latest) when each and every one should be in bed. Parents should check upon all their children, young and old, married ones as well. Husbands, wives, and parents; each and every one is included in this.

Bad company is another major indicator. Know who your children’s friends are. If they avoid letting on who their friends are, then stop them from that company. Becoming very angry and not liking being questioned are also signs. Why? What is there to hide? Make sure you don’t give up just because of their anger and attitude.

In a nutshell, if all family members take the responsibility to keep a very good eye on each other and challenge any abnormal attitude or behaviour instantly, then there is a very good chance that you will nip the problem in the bud, and save your family member and family from disaster.

Sorry to say but when both the husband and wife work and do not spend quality time with their children, then this is a recipe for disaster.

Finally, If you are approached by anyone who asks you to lend them some money, but wants you to keep it secret to the extent that no one must find out at all, DO NOT give a penny to such a person without taking, and checking, references. Nine times out of ten, they will be feeding a habit. Don’t be mistaken. This is not about confidentiality, it’s due diligence checks. You could unintentionally be assisting an addict. Don’t fall for it.

Almighty Allāh keep all of us in His Protection at all times, Āmeen.
