Lying Whilst Joking

السَّلاَمُ عَلَيْكُمْ وَرَحْمَةُ اللهِ وَبَرَكَاتُهُ

It’s Wednesday 24th November 2021 / 20 Rabī’ ul-Thānī 1443H.

My chosen topic today is Lying Whilst Joking.

Another of the major sins becoming very common these days, is the very bad habit of telling lies as a joke. A family member or friend will come up with a story, with a very serious face and really prolong it in such a way that the listeners have no reason to believe that the person is lying.

After a short while, the person will laugh and say ‘I’m just joking’. Remember, telling lies is completely forbidden and a very major sinful action. Even as a joke, we are not allowed to tell lies.

One of the biggest harms of this act is that many of us don’t even regard it as a sin. We just enjoy getting the listener interested and thinking it is true. Then we say, ‘it is only a joke’ and laugh about it.

If we have fallen into this bad habit, then work on yourself and let go of it. It is very deceiving and also very sinful.

Our beautiful religion teaches us that we should not even relay any news or info without verifying if it is true or not. ‘Hearsay’ is also a major sin.

As soon as a WhatsApp message arrives, without verifying or, on many occasions without even checking, the content ourself, we just forward to our broadcast list and contacts. If the info is incorrect, it will be defined as ‘lying’.

All the sins of the tongue, such as backbiting, slander and gossip, fall into this category of lying. Safeguard yourself and share this message with your contacts to save them as well.

May The Almighty beautify our character and bless us all with honesty and truthfulness at all times, Āmeen.
