Lowering Our Gaze
Our beautiful religion teaches us to be courteous and respectful at all times. Islām teaches modesty. Out of the many precious, valuable and priceless gifts given to us by our Creator is our eyesight. What a wonderful gift.
From the moment our eyes open after we are born until they close forever, when our soul departs the body, how many millions and billions of things will we have seen? The numbers are beyond comprehension. And then every day, The Almighty gives us an opportunity to close them for as many hours as we want and then open them again.
Our Creator, who has gifted us such beautiful eyes, has also set a few boundaries. At all times, we should abide by the limits set by Almighty Allāh. This message of mine today is addressed to both males and females.
One of the biggest and gravest sins we have fallen into today, is looking at non-Maḥrams. It is becoming so common that we do not even think it is a sin. Remember, if your gaze falls on a non-Maḥram, you must look away straight away.
That was accidental and will be forgiven. However, if you look a second time, then that gaze is sinful. Looking at non-Maḥrams with lust is termed ‘adultery of the eyes’. This is a major sin, which we must all refrain from. Our sisters think that this ruling just applies to men. Not at all – it applies to both.
Finally, due to the hot weather and the holiday season, many families are heading towards the beaches and the seaside. As Muslims we should look for quiet areas and always make sure we keep our distance from places and areas which are not suitable for human beings, never mind Muslims.
May Almighty Allāh grant us the ability to protect our gazes at all times and value one of our most precious and priceless gifts, our eyesight.
