85 Years Old And Still Going Strong
During the month of Ramaḍān, I visited the al-‘Asr Masjid on Preston New Rd, here in Blackburn. This is where I met Dr Muḥammad Patel, maybe one of the most famous GPs of Blackburn. Our brief meeting after a very long time was very interesting.
Dr Patel told me that he had come to Blackburn upon the advice of Marḥūm Ādam Bhai Fasiwālā. There were hardly any Muslim GPs in the early days and there was a desperate need for a Muslim GP. Dr Patel served the community of Blackburn for a very long time and is now retired. At the age of 85, he is doing very well and shared 3 pieces of precious advice with me.
First was that he always used to walk to his surgery and back. Although his surgery was very far from his house, he always walked. Even now, he walks a lot. Second is the intake of food. Dr Patel is very particular about how much he eats and what he eats. This has helped him enormously to keep nice and healthy.
Finally, Dr Patel mentioned to me that I have never argued with my wife in front of our children. If we have any issues or disputes, we both sit down on our own and resolve our differences. Our children have never seen us argue. The moments spent in the company of Dr Patel were very precious.
May The Almighty accept the services and sacrifices of our elders and bless us all to follow in their footsteps, Āmeen.
