السَّلاَمُ عَلَيْكُمْ وَرَحْمَةُ اللهِ وَبَرَكَاتُهُ
It’s Tuesday 15th September 2020.
Continuing on from yesterday, your child has now completed primary school and started at secondary school. Having taught children for 15 years, I can very clearly tell you that this is the change that has the biggest impact on the future of your child. The next 5 years will either make or break your child.
First and foremost, do your research and find the best possible secondary school for your child. Give your child quality time every day, show genuine interest and take part in their daily lives. Talk to them freely about everything, and create such an environment that they have full trust and confidence in discussing their issues with you very openly and frankly.
Your children will make mistakes; rectify and correct them with wisdom. At this age, it is very important for you to know your child’s friend circle. You should teach your children to have a positive impact upon their friends with their good character, rather than becoming influenced by others’ bad characteristics.
If you start noticing a difference in your child’s attitude and behaviour, take appropriate action immediately. Sit with them, and speak with them (not, to them). If required, be firm and strict, setting out the boundaries and limits.
This is a very testing time for you and them. If you are facing difficulties in managing, do not shy away from seeking help and assistance. Speak with other parents, family, friends, colleagues and take advice. Do not suffer in silence. In my experience, to save face and family respect, many families do not discuss these issues until things go out of control, after which it is an uphill task.
Seek assistance from your local Imām, ꜤUlamā and ꜤĀlimāhs; they will guide you. Most importantly, ask from Almighty Allāh everyday for pious children, He will surely help you in their upbringing.
After secondary school comes college and university.
