Netflix and Amazon Prime Video

السَّلاَمُ عَلَيْكُمْ وَرَحْمَةُ اللهِ وَبَرَكَاتُهُ

It’s Saturday 30th January 2021.

My chosen topic today is ‘Netflix and Amazon Prime Video’.

Recently, I have started to notice that I get a number of WhatsApp messages at crazy times. Previously, the cut off time for messages was 11pm; maybe the latest, very latest 12 midnight. However, now it’s any time from 1am to 5am. Trying to understand the logic, I asked a few friends what people would be doing, staying up during the night. The answer shocked me.

I had heard about Netflix and Prime Video, but didn’t really know what it was all about. Maybe this is one of the biggest, most dangerous, addictions rife within our community at the present time. I use the word ‘dangerous’ simply because we do not even realise that this is an addiction.

Regardless of the content of the movie or programme you are hooked on, if you have started spending hours upon hours, episode after episode, series after series, and you cannot wait another day for the next part, then you are in dangerous waters. If you are addicted to Netflix, Prime Video, or any other streaming service for that matter, seek help now and get yourself treated.

Discuss your addiction with your local Imām or ‘Ālimāt and take counselling from them. If you are the only one addicted in your family, seek help and assistance from other family members. If the whole family is addicted and everyone is in the same boat, take action straight away.

Coronavirus, lockdowns, the oft quoted high and rising death figures, and the steep numbers of serious hospital patients. All this was supposed to remind us of the reality and shortness of this life. Instead, we are becoming more and more sinful. What is our thinking? What has happened to us?

With deliveries from supermarkets and takeaways at the touch of a button, we are just glued to our screens for hours on end. What if Malakul Mawt was to strike precisely at that specific moment?

Every single family member needs to look within themselves first and then at their whole family. Check up on your children, especially at night, and keep a discreet handle on the behaviours of your married children. Otherwise, this addiction will wreck you and your whole family. Start decreasing gradually and ask Almighty Allāh to help you wean off this dangerous addiction.

Almighty Allāh save us from each and every kind of sin and addiction and keep all of us on the Straight Path, Āmeen.

This message needs to go to each and every household please.
