The 2 fasts of Muḥarram

As we are all aware, we are in the first Islāmic month, known as Muḥarram. The 10th of Muḥarram is known as ‘Āshūrāʾ. It is one of the most blessed days of the year. Fasting on this day carries a lot of reward: the sins of the previous year are forgiven.

When the Muslims migrated to Madinah al-Munawwarah, the Jewish community used to fast on this particular day. Our Holy Prophet, صَلَّىٰ ٱللَّٰهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ‎, advised the Muslims to fast on 2 days. Either the 9th (Sunday) & 10th (Monday), or 10th & 11th (Monday & Tuesday).

The days are quite long and the weather is also hot. However, bearing the great reward in mind, we should all try our utmost best to keep these two fasts.

Please note that ‘Āshūrāʾ is not an occasion to lament upon the martyrdom of the Holy Prophet’s grandson, Ḥaḍrat Husain, رَضِيَ ٱللَّٰهُ عَنْهُ. All our actions must conform to the Teachings of our Beloved Holy Prophet صَلَّىٰ ٱللَّٰهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ‎, at all times.

May The Almighty guide us all and keep us all steadfast on the genuine Teachings of Islam, Āmeen.
