During the last couple of weeks, I have been approached by a few families, who have had domestic issues. While trying to get to the bottom of the underlying causes, it transpired that each had a direct or indirect connection with social media. I have written a number of messages on this subject in the past, which are all available to read on my website.
Today, I make a very strong request to each and every parent and responsible person to ‘Take Control’ of the situation now, before it’s too late. The biggest and most serious problem is that each and every one is involved. From grandparents to grandchildren, husbands and wives, employers and employees, teachers and students, Imāms and Muqtadees. So who is going to look after who? It is very worrying indeed.
A father told me that he had previously made sure none of his children had a laptop or a mobile phone. When Covid kicked in, the schools requested that each child should have access to Zoom. That was it. The moment the children had their gadgets, off they went, completely lost into the world of social media.
My first advice is to restrict the use of social media gadgets as much as possible. Set an example yourself. Once you are in control of yourself, it will be much easier to advise others. Try to keep all the gadgets in the living room downstairs, where all can see what is being accessed at all times.
You will have to be very firm. Make sure there are no passwords or access codes on all your social media gadgets. This will enable you to check what sites are being accessed, etc. Remember, we are all in this together. Bear in mind that Almighty Allāh is watching everything and has full knowledge of what you are up to.
Do not deceive yourself or your family. I cannot emphasise enough, but marriages are breaking up, children are leaving home, families are drifting apart. The root cause? Social media.
May The Almighty protect each and every one of us and our generations to come from the evils of social media, Āmeen.
