Are We Extravagant?

A monthly magazine by the name of Al Balagh is published by Dārul Uloom Karachi, under the auspices of Shaikh ul-Islam Mufti Muḥammad Taqī Usmāni Ṣāḥib, دامت برکاتہم. In the latest Urdu edition, Mufti Taqī Ṣāḥib has touched upon the definition of ‘extravagance’.

To use any commodity more than necessary is termed as ‘extravagance’.

Let’s take water as an example. If we really honestly look deeply into our use of water during a 24 hour period, without a shadow of doubt, each and every one of us will accept that we are wasting so much water unnecessarily. Let’s take food as another example. Hardly a household will be able to claim that they never ever throw food away.

Thinking about our gas and electricity supply, so many appliances and gadgets are left on using power unnecessarily. According to Mufti Taqī Ṣāḥib, even a little abuse of any commodity is termed as extravagance.

He cites an occasion when he ended up in Muzdalifah, during Hajj, with only one small bottle of water between 2 of them and they both had to do Wuḍū. Mufti Ṣāḥib mentions that at such times we value each and every little drop of water.

On a normal day, we let so much water just flow without a care in the world. My message today is that even on a normal day we should not waste any one little thing at all. However, in very difficult economic times such as what we are witnessing now, we can all do our little bit and stop wasting the precious and priceless favours and bounties of Almighty Allāh.

May The Almighty give us all the correct guidance and save us all from each and every kind of extravagance, Āmeen.

The Al Balagh magazines are published monthly in English and Urdu. Articles from some older editions are available at https://www.albalagh.net/.
